Requirement: Pick up and place cable drums on the machine independently
Stefal, a company involved in producing electrical wiring and electromechanical assemblies since 1978, needed to optimise loading operations in the cutting area.
A system was needed that would enable operators to handle cable drums independently, eliminating the need for forklift drivers or manual handling.
The challenge: Industrial coil handling
Cable drums are often heavy and vary in size, which poses several problems:
- Long waits due to the need for dedicated personnel
- Poor ergonomics during manual lifting
- Health hazards for operators (e.g. back strain)
Another critical issue was the significant variation in size, materials, and structure of the drums. Some were cylindrical, made of rigid cardboard, and had galvanised sheet metal edging and wooden covers. Others were hexagonal and made of lightweight cardboard with handle slots.
The new drum and coil lifter therefore had to ensure:
- Reaching the centre of the pallet with full stability
- Safe lifting, even with stacked loads
- Safe operation with stacked loads, optimising maximum heights
The Solution: The Customised Coil and Drum Lifter
The engineering department designed a trellis lifter, equipped with two innovative features:
Lifting ropes
Perfect for hexagonal and cylindrical cardboard drums. The double hook ensures even weight distribution, preventing damage to the drum and minimising sway during handling.
Suction cups
Perfect for cylindrical drums with wooden lids. They ensure safe handling without risk of damage.
