Need: Picking up and placing cable drums in the car independently
Stefal, a company active since 1978 in the production of electrical wiring harnesses and electromechanical assembly, was looking for a solution to optimize loading operations in the cutting area.
There was a need to implement a system that would allow operators to handle cable drums independently, without resorting to forklift operators or team lifting.
The challenge: Industrial coil handling
Cable drums, often heavy and varying in size, posed several problems:
- Long waits due to the need for dedicated staff
- Poor ergonomics during manual lifting
- Health hazards to operators (back strain)
A further critical issue was the great heterogeneity of the drums, which differed in size, materials and structure: some were cylindrical, made of rigid cardboard with galvanized sheet metal edging and wooden lids; others were hexagonal, made of lightweight cardboard and equipped with slotted handles.
The new drum and coil lifter was therefore to ensure:
- Reaching the center bank in full stability
- Safety in lifting ancluding with stacked loads
- Operating safely with stacked loads, optimizing maximum heights
The Solution: The Customized Coil and Drum Lifter
The engineering department designed a trellis lift, equipped with two innovative options:
Lifting ropes
Perfect for hexagonal and cylindrical cardboard drums. The double hook allows even weight distribution, preventing damage to the drum and minimizing sway during handling.
Gripping suction cups
Perfect for cylindrical drums with wooden lids. They ensure safe handling without risk of damage.
